15 Most Insultingly Bad Sequels To Great Movies
7. Spider-Man 3 (2007)
At the time of its release, Spider-Man 2 was generally accepted to be one of the best (if not the best) superhero movies ever made, improving substantially upon the already terrific 2002 original.
As such, Spider-Man 3 arrived on a huge wave of hype, with fans impossibly excited to see the iconic villain Venom (Topher Grace) finally adapted to the big screen.
Oh.
Spider-Man 3 is a textbook example of a superhero sequel that tried to do far more than a single movie could possibly support. In addition to hurling three villains at Spidey (Tobey Maguire), the film's also bogged down horribly by several mediocre subplots: a misguided ret-con of Uncle Ben's (Cliff Robertson) death, a symbiote-afflicted Peter, and the introduction of Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard).
Almost all of the ingenuity and passion director Sam Raimi displayed on the previous two films is gone - perhaps because he apparently wasn't a fan of Venom - which combined with poor editing and some extremely ugly CGI (even in 2007) makes the movie an absolute trainwreck of a threequel.
