3. Boyhood
Richard Linklater’s sprawling coming of age drama following
a boy from childhood through adolescence and into young adulthood is undeniably
ambitious and unique in scope and execution. Produced over the course of 12
years, the cast and crew filmed for a few weeks each year to realistically
capture the growing up process of its young star Ellar Coltrane and upon its
release, Boyhood became the critics best loved film of 2014, going on to win a
whole host of awards from Golden Globes to BAFTAs.
While it’s an undoubtedly a ground-breaking piece of cinema, and not to mention risky considering Linklater used the same cast throughout and anyone of them could’ve popped their clogs at any time and put a real dampener on the project, the thing about focusing on the minutiae of everyday life through annual snapshots of adolescence is that it proves something – real life is actually pretty mundane.
Boyhood is an interesting and fresh concept, but a film that is more impressive in its execution that the actual finished product.
