8. Moonrise Kingdom
Alongside a select few fellow directors, among them
Christopher Nolan and the Coen Brothers, Wes Anderson managed to have three of
his films ranked on the BBC’s list but while The Royal Tenenbaums, his quirky
comedy about familial dysfunction, and pre-World War II, Eastern Europe set
tragicomedy The Grand Budapest Hotel may very well be deserving of their
ranking but Moonrise Kingdom, however, is not.
It bears the hallmark of many a Wes Anderson film – visually rich, an impressive ensemble cast and a retro soundtrack to die for – though ends up being overly twee and whimsical with the kind of forced nostalgia, severe lack of humour and unsympathetic characters that makes watching it a far less enjoyable experience that its advocate’s praise would suggest.
