15 Most Over-Rated Movies Of The 21st Century
7. Moulin Rouge!
Baz Luhrmann’s Red Curtain Trilogy started off promisingly
enough with the charming, warm-hearted and undeniably camp Strictly Ballroom
and progressing onto to his frenetically paced and sumptuously styled
modernisation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet but his third instalment Moulin
Rouge! – set in turn-of-the-century Paris and focusing on another pair of
star-crossed lovers, courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman) and writer Christian
(Ewan McGregor) – took the trilogy’s signature theatrics and over-the-topness
to intolerable levels.
Garishly coloured, hyperactively edited and set to a
cacophonous soundtrack that rips from all corners of 21st century
musical output, from Nirvana to Madonna, some see Moulin Rouge! as a pop
culture masterpiece but it’s the kind of nausea-inducing film – both in pace
and sickly sweet plot – that has you reaching for the sick bucket.
