3. A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place
Platinum Dunes

Rotten Tomatoes: 85% (Average Score: 8.17/10)

IMDb: 7.5

A film that became a universal critical success without anyone actually knowing why, A Quiet Place is a rock-solid, three-star creature feature; nothing more and nothing less.

It's brilliantly acted, frequently very suspenseful and overall a good time at the movies, but it does have its fair share of issues. The characters are under-developed, the plot is thin and the whole thing is mostly just characters trying to stay silent while doing activities that usually make a fair amount of noise. This would've worked brilliantly as a game-show, but as an actual movie it does get repetitive. Also, who gets pregnant during the apocalypse?

The backlash to A Quiet Place didn't take long to kick in and since there's not a huge amount to it other than the gimmick of it being mostly silent, that's not surprising. Perhaps the most ridiculous thing of all is that there was a fair amount of thematic analysis of A Quiet Place and many were discussing 'hidden meanings' in the film... it's a shallow B-Movie for crying out loud. There's very little in the way of subtext here.
