2. The Ring

The Ring

Rotten Tomatoes: 71% (Average Score: 6.61/10)

IMDb: 7.1

This remake of the Japanese Horror classic Ring might benefit from Gore Verbinski's strong directing and solid performances, but the positive reviews remain bewildering.

The Ring is not only full of clunky dialogue and terrible characterisation, but it also lacks any true fear. It is creepy thanks to the strong visuals, but it's not actually scary thanks to the lame shocks and lack of any actual action most of the time. Additionally, while The Ring adopting a slow-burn approach was admirable, even that doesn't work since rather than being frightening, it's overly quiet, slow, empty and, above all, boring.

If anyone does actually manage to be patient with this the whole way through, then spoiler alert: your patience will not be rewarded, since this ends with an embarrassingly bad CGI finale that ruins the ending of the original film, which was one of horror's scariest scenes.

Compare this to the original and The Ring's inadequacies only become even more noticeable. For example, instead of being a psychic prone to accidentally killing people, all the ghost girl does while alive is... cause horses to drown themselves. That's an insulting remake change if there ever was one.
