Hostel is not a good film. Although the performances are strong, the characters are extremely annoying, there's no real sense of dread, there's no social commentary and the pacing is completely off. Therefore, it's a mystery as to why it's become so notorious, since although the violence is horrid it's not as bad as in other modern horror films and it wasn't even any good in the first place.

What makes the mixed-to-positive reviews Hostel has received even more baffling is that many other, far better horror films which also focus on gory violence have been criticised for simply being gore-fests, so why did Hostel get a free pass?

Look at Final Destination and Saw, two noughties horror classics. Final Destination has a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 34%, which is one of the stupidest ratings on the entire site, and Saw has a rating of only 48%; both of these movies got these low scores because of their gruesome, gore-driven nature yet they are far better movies than Hostel. So is Hostel's 2007 sequel, yet critics dismissed that one too. What gives?
