This one will probably be the most controversial inclusion on this list. It should be said that The Descent is a good horror film and it's certainly worth seeing, but it is also rough around the edges and the fact that it's commonly seen as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, horror films of the 2000s doesn't quite add up.

The main reason for this is that The Descent is actually guilty of the two biggest complaints about modern horror: excessive jump scares and too much gore. The Descent indulges in both these things far too much and does get quite exhausting at times, while the less said about the film's underwhelming monsters (Gollum-like creatures in the dark), the better.

The Descent is also very well-acted, full of strong characters and it is an intense viewing so it's definitely one of the more worthwhile horror films from the 2000s, a dreadful decade for horror, but it's not necessarily an all-time classic and it's definitely not the best British horror film of recent times. 28 Days Later takes that for sure.

Speaking of which...
