This sequel to 28 Days Later was a crushing disappointment, so why did it get generally positive reviews?

Fine, it has its moments, but 28 Weeks Later is not particularly successful for the most part. For starters, it's one of the most illogical horror films ever written, in which the two dumbest kids ever to feature in a horror film break quarantine in order to fetch a photograph of their apparently-dead mother in case they forget what she looks like... and the US military, who have set up a 'high-security' safe zone, don't even notice them sneaking off.

Oh, and when their mother is brought to base, infected but still-alive, her husband (Robert Carlyle) kisses her and, inevitably, becomes a zombie himself. What the hell is this?

It's impossible to get into 28 Weeks Later because the outbreak was so avoidable and you'll be constantly rooting for those stupid kids, who are two of the main characters, to be eaten. Add in the migraine-inducing camerawork and hollow script and you've got a repetitive, exhausting and shockingly ugly gore-fest that has none of the humanity that made 28 Days Later a modern classic.
