The slap heard around the world wasn't the only big WTF moment of the 2022 Oscars. Another big shock was CODA winning the big prize despite being worse than most of the other Best Picture nominees.
Still, that alone isn't what puts CODA on this list. Many Best Pictures, including last year's winner Nomadland, weren't the best of the bunch but since they're great films, it's hard to complain about them winning.
CODA, on the other hand, is not a great film. It's a very well-done feel-good drama filled with strong performances and smart comedy, but it's also a predictable, by-the-numbers and ultimately unmemorable affair that doesn't offer any surprises or much to think about afterwards.
It's also weighed down by a really terrible romantic subplot and its many inaccuracies in its portrayal of the deaf community, meaning that this isn't necessarily the big win for representation some have described it as.
Simply put, CODA is an utterly laughable choice for Best Picture. Spider-Man: No Way Home would've been a more deserving winner and yes, that is said in all seriousness.
An Underrated Alternative: Mass (2021) - an absolutely stunning drama that premiered at the same Sundance as CODA did and showcases some of the best writing and acting of 2021. Sadly, the Academy ignored it and not enough people have seen it.
