15 Most Overrated Movies Of The 2020s (So Far)

9. King Richard

Elvis Movie
Warner Bros.

Rotten Tomatoes: 90% (Average Score: 7.60/10)

IMDb: 7.5

King Richard was not only very well-received, but became a big player at the Academy Awards and many of the other big award ceremonies and as a result, aside from Adam McKay's Don't Look Up (which actually got fairly mixed reviews and therefore dodged this list), it stands as arguably the weakest Best Picture nominee of the decade so far.

King Richard is beautifully acted, decently filmed and occasionally stirring, but for the most part it's just such a familiar, predictable and unchallenging Oscar-Bait drama that feels more like an extended recap then a coherent story.

We get stale Oscar-Bait biopics every year, but more recently most of them - such as Bohemian Rhapsody or 2021's Aretha Franklin biopic, Respect - have been getting the measured three-star reviews they deserved. Therefore, it's hard to see why King Richard did so well when it really isn't any better than films like those aforementioned two.

Of course, King Richard is going to be remembered. Not only did it win Will Smith his Oscar but it'll no doubt forever have some association with Will Smith's less-than-stellar behaviour that Oscar night. But were it not for those things, King Richard would've been forgotten with lightning speed.

An Underrated Alternative: Rocketman (2019) - A genuinely terrific Oscar-Bait movie that failed to get the Oscar nominations or widespread success it deserved.
