Robert Wise's The Sound of Music remains the most successful live-action musical film of all time. The movie was released in 1965, and despite being remembered fondly by just about everyone who's seen it, it wasn't a critical success when it was released.

Still, the audience loved it, and the film managed to become the highest-grossing film of 1965. It surpassed Gone with the Wind as the highest-grossing film of all time, which is a distinction it held for five years. In terms of ticket sales, during its first release, it was seen by an estimated 283 million people.

The Sound of Music won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, but those were hardly the only awards it received. In addition to Golden Globes and others, it was recognized by the American Film Institute as the 55th greatest American movie of all time.

When it was made, the production costs for The Sound of Music amounted to around $8.2 million. When that amount is adjusted to 2020, the budget comes to around $67.6 million. Once all the worldwide ticket sales were tallied up and adjusted, The Sound of Music made $1.315 billion resulting in an estimated profit of $591 million.
