4. Pulp Fiction

Quentin Tarantino's 1994 may have been heavily inspired by crime tales of the screen and the page from decades past, but it became the epitome of cinematic cool for generations to come.

Building on the unique sensibilities evidenced in Tarantino's 1992 debut Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction takes sharp-suited hit-men, hulking mobsters, femme fatales and down-and-out sluggers, and fills their mouths with heavily stylised yet relatable dialogue, imagining real human reactions to outlandish movie scenarios, whilst laying on the pop culture references good and thick.

Yes, it's over two and a half hours and the bulk of that is nothing but talking, which might ordinarily put some viewers off; but when it's Tarantino's words being spoken in career-best performances from John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis and most memorably Samuel L Jackson, the time flies by, every time.

Endlessly repeatable quote: "And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger, those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers! And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!" (Note: this is not at all how Ezekiel 25:17 goes in the Bible.)

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
