8. Monty Python And The Holy Grail
Sometimes we rewatch old favourites for the thrills and spills, the charismatic performances, the nuanced drama. But sometimes, especially when it comes to comedy, all we need is something silly, silly, silly.
While there's definitely a case to be made that the real masterpiece of British comedy legends Monty Python was their later effort Life of Brian, when it comes to comfort viewing their 1975 film Holy Grail surely has it beat. Though based extremely loosely on the legends of King Arthur, this is really just a jumping-off point for a slew of increasingly absurd and nonsensical sketches.
From the political ruminations over Arthur's claim to power ("strange women lying in ponds is no basis for a system of government!"), to the grotesquerie of the Black Knight and The Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog, to the jaunty Camelot song-and-dance (key inspiration behind Eric Idle's subsequent stage musical Spamalot), to the bawdy Castle Anthrax sequence, there's a gag to tickle every funny bone, even after innumerable viewings.
Not to mention that magnificent ending - or rather, the complete lack thereof.
Endlessly repeatable quote: "I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster, and your father smells of elderberries!"
