12. The Ancient One Is "Whitewashed" (Doctor Strange)

The Controversy: The Ancient One, typically an Asian character in the comics, will be played by Tilda Swinton in the upcoming Doctor Strange movie, much to the disappointment of many who criticised the move as "whitewashing" a role tailor-made for an Asian actor.

Why It's Ridiculous: It's absolutely true that Asians (among other ethnicities) don't get enough roles in Hollywood, but it's important to remember that The Ancient One is a fairly stereotypical Asian character, and Marvel may well have deferred to Swinton in order to lessen the perceived racial stereotyping.

One can argue that perhaps the characterisation should simply be improved without changing the character's race, but considering that Swinton is one of the most chameleonic actors working today, she's likely going to give an ambiguous, otherworldly performance regardless, not one that specifically places her as a white female.

Again, it's a case of a valid point being blown wildly out of proportion, especially when there are Reddit threads full of Asians expressing zero offense over the casting, while countless white people have opted to be offended on their behalf.
