15 Most Ridiculously Absurd Casting Calls Of The 21st Century

12. Justin Chatwin - Dragonball Evolution (2009)

Dragonball Evolution
20th Century Fox

Of all the whitewashing controversies in Hollywood, the decision to hire Justin Chatwin - then mostly known for War Of The Worlds - is easily one of the absolute worst. He was brought in to play legendary figure Goku, who might well be the most famous anime character of all time with a huge, rabid fan-base.

The decision to cast not only a white actor but also one entirely not up to the task or of even remotely significant profile was a kick in the teeth for those fans and for the source material. It's no wonder the show's creator disowned it as an alternate reality version of his creation.

Did It Work?

Would you count 15% on Rotten Tomatoes a success? No, it didn't work. Evolution is an abysmal film that mishandles just about everything and Chatwin is nowhere near charismatic or talented enough to carry a character as importanr as Goku. This was anti-fan-bait, essentially, and it got the reaction it deserved.
