15. Naomi Watts Not Nominated For Mulholland Drive

Mulholland Drive was one of the best films of the 2000s, pure and simple. It was confusing and wonderful and strange in typical David Lynch fashion. Uncharacteristically, Lynch's work was recognised with a Best Director nomination at the 74th Academy Awards in 2002. But that's all the recognition that Mulholland Drive received from the Academy. That the film didn't receive nods for Best Original Screenplay or Best Score were quite the glaring omissions. Worst of all, however, was the shunning of Naomi Watt's incredible breakthrough performance as Betty Elms. Watts is fantastic in the complex central role of a woman who is slowly losing her grip on reality (or is she?). As with a lot of Lynch's work, you are left with more questions than answers when the credits roll. But through that confusion, Watts still carries the film and steals some truly remarkable scenes (such as the famous 'audition scene'). Halle Berry won the Academy Award for Best Actress that year, which is fair enough - Berry's performance in Monster's Ball was also exceptional. But how could Watts not even register in a year that saw Renée Zelweger nominated for Bridget Jones's Diary?
