15 Most Terrifying Horror Film Moments Of The Decade (So Far)
1. The Lipstick-Face Demon's First Appearance (Insidious)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGT87k_CVJ0Though some criticize Insidious for its final act, it's hard to deny the power of that first half, and this two minute clip is the scariest two minutes of this decade of horror. During the sequence, Josh's mother comes to visit, explaining that she had a dream about the house and about his son, Dalton. As she tells the story in an extremely concerned voice, the film depicts what she saw: she lurks through the house at night, enters Dalton's room, and sees a creature standing over his bed. She asks the creature what it wants, and it says it wants Dalton.
The music fades away as she says, "I can still hear that voice," which kind of sounds like the wrap up to this sequence. Then, just when you thought it was over, James Wan suddenly cuts to Josh, and the demon is standing right behind him. It comes out of absolutely nowhere and catches you completely off guard, partially because horror films rarely have their key moments happen during the day like this. Wan assures us that the dark dream world is where the scares will happen but the bright living room is safe, and then he instantly violates that rule. He completely turns the tables on the audience, resulting in the most chilling and surprising horror moment of the decade.
