14. Inception – Ariadne Sees The Anniversary Memory

Inception is a lot of things; confusing, yes, awesome, absolutely, but it also has one scene in particular that is straight out of a slasher movie. The scene in question is when Ariadne (Ellen Page), enter Cobb’s (Leonardo DiCaprio), anniversary memory.

Ariadne arrives in a wrecked hotel room, and as she steps out into the dream, she steps on a glass creating shrilling ring that cuts through room like a knife. As the ringing fades the camera cuts to Mal (Marion Cotillard) on the sofa whose eyes snap toward Ariadne. As Mal gets up and moves toward her, her voice is so soft and so gentle that you aren’t put at ease, you're made to feel nervous. She overtakes Ariadne’s personal space, circling her and asking her intimate questions to throw her off even more than she already is.

Then, as Mal picks up a broken wine glass, Cobb appears making us feel safe again, as we believe he is in control. Mal is left in shot while the two talk but is just out of focus, making the audience momentarily forgot that she’s still a threat. She then lunges forward at Ariadne, but Cobb drags her back to the elevator, closing bard gate. Mal is left on the other side thrashing and screaming, and as the elevator rises, she’s left looking like a crazed caged animal.

This scene is bone chilling, largely because it comes out of nowhere and suddenly thrown into a small space with an immediate danger.
