12. How To Be Single

Nerve Movie Movie
Warner Bros.

On the surface, How To Be Single’s plotline – a group of young women in New York City navigate the trials and tribulations of the modern dating scene – might sound like your average, run of the mill romantic comedy. But to give the film its dues it does largely stay away from that old rom-com trope of needing a man to be happy and instead focuses on characters enjoying the single life, with romantic relationships portrayed as an option rather than the key to eternal happiness. While it might drift into formulaic territory at times, it boasts a likeable lead in Dakota Johnson and plenty of laughs from comedic co-stars Rebel Wilson and Leslie Mann.

It does seem like the kind of film many critics and moviegoers might dismiss based on its premise alone and understandably so. But in a genre full of rom-coms that rarely extend beyond ‘boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy eventually gets girl back and they live happily ever after’ territory, How To Be Single is a refreshing change.
