11. The Invitation

A slow-burning psychological horror where the focus is on tension and paranoia rather than a constant stream of gore, The Invitation is the latest effort from Jennifer’s Body and Girlfight director Karyn Kasuma. Logan Marshall-Green stars as grieving father David who is invited to a dinner party at the house of his ex-wife Eden and her new husband along with a group of mutual friends. The soiree marks the first time the group have seen each other since the tragic death of David and Eden’s son two years earlier, and it soon transpires that Eden has found an unconventional way of coping with grief that centres around a creepy brainwashing cult.

Claustrophobic and unsettling, The Invitation earned itself some rave reviews after its SXSW Festival premiere but sadly the indie horror only got a limited theatrical release which didn’t exactly give the film a massive amount of exposure amongst the general movie-going public. Hopefully it’ll earn its stripes through its VOD release, because it’s undoubtedly one of this year’s best horrors.
