15 Most Underrated Movies Of 2016
13. The Neon Demon
With such a polarising director as Nicolas Winding Refn any film he puts out is bound to be somewhat divisive and that’s exactly the case with his latest movie, psychological horror The Neon Demon. Set within the beauty and youth obsessed world of fashion, the film stars Elle Fanning as a young model who is quite literally devoured by the industry. To give you an idea of just how divisive a film it is, when it premiered at Cannes earlier this year it received both a standing ovation and a chorus of boos and jeers.
It might’ve found a few fans, but many critics dismissed it as pretentious and void of meaning. Yes, it might have lengthy, arty sequences in which not much seems to happen at all and then there’s those much-discussed controversial scenes – regurgitated eyeballs, lesbian necrophilia and Elle Fanning deep-throating a knife included – that seem inserted to shock for shock’s sake. But, the film is undeniably stylish and a must-see if arthouse horrors like Suspiria are your thing.
