15 Most Underrated Spy Movies Of All Time

10. Argo

Will Smith Enemy Of The State
Warner Bros.

Probably the best-recognised film on this list in terms of awards and acclaim, 2012's Argo nonetheless earns a place here as it has been all but forgotten since its release.

Directed by and starring former Batman Ben Affleck, this unbearably tense film tells the sort-of-hilarious true story of American diplomats being smuggled out of a hostile Iran in the early eighties... through a bizarre caper wherein the captives pretended to be filmmakers shooting a non-existent sci-fi movie.

Featuring superb supporting work from a distinguished cast including Little Miss Sunshine's Alan Arkin, Arachnophobia's John Goodman, and a nervy, intense Bryan Cranston (then at the height of his Breaking Bad era career renaissance), this one deserves to be spotlighted again for its taut storytelling and surprisingly funny script.
