15 Most Underrated Spy Movies Of All Time

9. No Way Out

Will Smith Enemy Of The State

Cocktail director Roger Donaldson's 1987 neo-noir No Way Out is not his masterpiece.

That title undoubtedly goes to his ingenious B-movie Species, the sci-fi horror which asked the question on everyone's lips: What if Alien, but with t**s?

However this Kevin Costner vehicle does nonetheless deserve a place here as its mysterious plot, which follows a young Navy lieutenant as he's interrogated about his part as an unwitting pawn in international espionage, features an all-time great twist to rival that of The Usual Suspects.

Strong words, yes, but try to untangle the plot of this Gene Hackman co-starring thriller and wait for the hammer-blow ending. It's the sort of reveal which not only clears up the convoluted preceding plot, but leaves viewers reeling at its ingenious simplicity.

Damn it Costner, where was this energy circa Waterworld?
