The Proposition
Buena Vista Pictures

Yes, alright, so this 2003 effort comes from the director of The Postman. But we’ve collectively given Kevin Costner enough flack for his flops—particularly when he gets credited with Waterworld’s failure despite not even helming the thing.

This return to form for the filmmaker and actor sees him united with taciturn old Hollywood hero Robert Duvall as a pair of cowboys who encounter trouble with Michael Gambon’s ruthless land baron. What ensues is a slow and deliberate build up to one of cinema’s most exciting shoot outs, an unbearably tense sequence which harkens back to the glory days of this genre.
