films feel mean-spirited, or a little pointless. Some films feel downright
cruel and nasty.
Then there are films like The Road helmer John Hillcoat’s 2005 effort The Proposition.
As anyone who knows anything about Australian history can tell you, the state’s past is defined by brutal oppression and horrific violence, and boy does The Proposition have no qualms about putting that front and centre throughout its runtime.
Written, bizarrely, by cult musician Nick Cave, the flick is as pitilessly brutal as the western can get, but as a result it’s an accurate and unsparing depiction of the cruel and often inhuman reality behind this often romanticized era.
