6. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives

It may come as something of a surprise to see a Palme d'Or winning movie on a list of weird and twisted movies, but since the festival is currently well underway its inclusion is timely, to say the least. Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives isn't entirely twisted but for Western audiences its approach to examining the afterlife and the nature of death and past lives is certainly weird enough to warrant inclusion. The titular character lives out his final days in the company of his friends, while his dead wife and lost son appear in non-human form to usher him through to the next plane of existence. Weerasethakul directs with a painterly eye for composition and a restrained camera and editing style - one reviewer described it more as a "floating world" than a film, a summary which captures the subconscious level upon which the film functions. Challenging cinema, yes - but hugely rewarding for viewers with patience.
