Perhaps one of the most surprising things about Under The Skin - without a doubt one of the strangest movies to have come out since 2010 - is the fact that Scarlett Johansson appeared in the lead role. Most audiences are far more familiar with her jumping around performing action heroics in films like Lucy and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Perhaps more surprising is the fact that, for the scenes filmed when she prowls the streets of Scotland in her Transit van, the members of the public she encounters were oblivious to the hidden cameras as well as the fact that they were talking to one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. But beyond these anecdotal points lies a movie of unnerving atmosphere married with a strange sense of beauty, as Johansson's extraterrestrial seeks out prey to lure to her void-like lair to sap the lifeforce from their naked bodies. Under The Skin is aptly titled, since this is where much of the haunting imagery resides once the film has drawn to an end - if only more A-list stars ventured away from the blockbusters and invested their talents in strange, mesmerising productions such as this.
