6. The Whitewashing Plot Twist - Ghost In The Shell

There was a ton of pre-release controversy about the decision to cast Scarlett Johansson as a "whitewashed" version of the manga's original protagonist, Motoko Kusanagi, who in this Hollywood version was renamed Mira Killian.

In a somewhat misguided attempt to hand-waive the controversy, however, the whitewashing actually becomes a plot point, with it being revealed late in the movie that Mira is actually Motoko, who has had her brain transferred from her original body into this Caucasian shell.

Some commended it as a brave, ballsy way to tackle the criticism head-on, but most fans of the source material simply saw it as arrogant and insulting, and above all else an attempt to sidestep a very genuine conversation about representation in Hollywood.
