15 Movie Poster Trends That Really Need To Die
10. White Backgrounds
There's something very incomplete about a profile of the main characters standing in the foreground of an endless white void.
Much like a lazy Photoshop job; the white canvas may appear clean to some marketeers and moviegoers, but in reality, it's a movie poster trope that is excused and used in so many variations from comic book movies (Ant Man), teen comedies (Sex Drive) all the way to action comedies (Deadpool, Mr & Mrs Smith).
Admittedly, the central image on the poster does stand out and an argument can be made that a colourful background can draw focus away from what could potentially sell the movie.
But think of something as bright and bombastic as the poster for Thor: Ragnarok and you'll get a feeling that there is something creative and alluring about the Thor poster that one might not get from even the poster for Forrest Gump.
Subtlety is key, and maybe I'm missing the point with why a white background is chosen? But let's start seeing some variety! Of course you have the other side which is a grim, shadowy, dark background that darkens whatever is in the middle.
But white feels so standardized now that ask, surely marketeers are more creative?
