15 Movie Trailers You Won't Believe Were Allowed To Exist

10. The "Serious" Iron Man Movie - Iron Man 3

The first trailer for Iron Man 3 was like nothing the Marvel Cinematic Universe had promoted before, suggesting a darker, more haunting sequel which would put Tony Stark on the back foot as he faced his most dangerous enemy yet (Ben Kingsley's Mandarin) and suffered with severe psychological problems.

As it turned out, Iron Man 3 wasn't The Dark Knight Rises of the MCU as most expected, but about as light as usual for the franchise, full of quips and being actually pretty low on legitimate, weighty turmoil.

In fact, even the advertised antagonist was a literal joke, with the reveal that Kingsley's character was a smoke-screen, an actor employed to keep the "real" Mandarin (Guy Pearce) hidden.

Trolling the nerds is a big deal, especially given the Mandarin's popularity, so it's actually pretty crazy that Marvel Studios even dared trying to get away with something like this. Still, the $1.21 billion box office haul suggests they pulled it off, some angry comic book fans aside.
