15 Movies From This Decade (So Far) Destined To Become Classics

4. Amour

Austrian-born filmmaker Michael Haneke has spent much of his career doing his best to shock audiences, delving into the darker side of human nature with a nihilistic enthusiasm which many people find off-putting and deliberately confrontational. Amour is by no means an easier film to watch than some of his earlier works in terms of the way in which it drains the emotions, but the core message here is undoubtedly his most humane and moving. After Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) suffers a stroke, her husband Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is saddled with the responsibility of caring for her as her condition deteriorates. Amour is a film which rests on the exceptional performances (Riva was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award), which Haneke holds together with a degree of compassion rarely seen in his output. It's likely to be remembered in years to come not just as a classic but a true masterpiece.
