15 Movies That Made 2017 The Dumbest Year Ever
2. The Emoji Movie
Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse than a movie studio planning to make a Hungry Hungry Hippos movie or have Ridley Scott helm a Monopoly adaptation (look them up), a movie based on...emojis...actually got made.
More to the point, The Emoji Movie was released in cinemas and made over $200 million despite universal critical scorn (with several critics making liberal use of the poop emoji).
From its generic "express yourself" message to its forgettable characters and indifferent animation, it's a seemingly harmlessly bland movie that becomes aggressively awful as it spends most of its runtime trying to market phone apps and games to young children.
It's gross enough on a moral and ethical level, but doubles down by also not being remotely funny, charming or at all entertaining. Dumb filmmaking for sure, but depressingly good business, it seems.
