15 Movies That Thought They Were Smart But Totally Weren't
8. Watchmen
This adaptation of the legendary graphic novel of the same name is a famously polarising film. Some love it, others think it was a major misfire. Personally, I hated it.
Despite a brilliant performance from Jackie Earle Haley and typically sharp visuals from director Zack Snyder, Watchmen's inflated length, miserable tone, dull action scenes and complete lack of substance make it one of the most insufferable superhero films of all time.
Despite its moody, art-house vibe and adult content, Watchmen is less thought-provoking than most of the more conventional superhero films out there. Frustratingly, Watchmen does occasionally brush up against some interesting ideas but the (mostly) flat characterisation and the stilted, pretentious dialogue prevent anything from ever landing.
As well as this, just like a few of the other films on this list, it's unaware of its own silliness. The villain's plan makes zero sense, the superheroes all look like middle-aged cosplayers and it's also got one of the dumbest, most cringe-worthy sex scenes in film history (sound-tracked to Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah of all things), but viewers are still expected to take it seriously.
