The Buzz: David Fincher adapts Gillian Flynn's acclaimed novel revolving around Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck), a man accused of causing the disappearance of his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike) Oscar Predictions: If Fincher's take on the material is strong enough, Best Picture is certainly a possible prospect here, though Best Director may be a reach given the exceptionally strong field with a number of novel potential nominees (Richard Linklater and Inarritu especially). Rosamund Pike could very well sneak in for Best Actress, but easily the most likely are Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Cinematography. Short of a miracle, expect Gone Girl to go home empty-handed: Oscar voters may appreciate the film enough to nominate it, but probably find it too conventional or "pulpy" to be worthy of major awards. If the reportedly clever re-interpretation of the novel is a success, Adapted Screenplay seems possible, but likely nothing else. Release Date: October 2nd (UK), October 3rd (US)
