9. The Gift
This is actually Joel Edgerton's directional debut, but you'd think he'd been doing this for years from The Gift.
The Gift is a remarkably confident and clever debut for Edgerton and it's also exceptionally smart as thrillers go. Not only is every twist a huge surprise, but they feel earned and believable, which is very hard to pull off.
Edgerton's work behind the camera is matched by his turn in front of it through his wonderful performance as the villain. That being said, although he's excellent, as is Rebecca Hall, the show is stolen by Jason Bateman, who gives a superb non-comedic performance that goes into very dark territory.
The ending isn't entirely satisfying, but that doesn't undermine the overall skill and emotional power of this unusually clever psychological thriller.
