15 Must-See Blumhouse Movies

8. The Purge: Election Year

Sinister Ethan Hawke
Universal Pictures

The third Purge film is the best movie in the franchise to date. It builds on the good work of The Purge: Anarchy to deliver a deliciously dark, infectiously fun yet still effective and disturbing horror-thriller. As horror threequels go, it's unusually good. It's also backed up by a good cast and refined directing from franchise creator James DeMonaco.

Election Year is a great display of how a low-budget horror threequel should be done. It expands on the world of the franchise, gets darker than its predecessors, ups the stakes, doesn't just repeat what happened in the first two films and, most importantly of all, is actually written with a bit of care. This feels like a sequel which cares about quality more than money and that is extremely satisfying to see.

All in all, one of the best second sequels to a horror film of recent times.
