15 Obscure Horror Films You Need To See

11. Picnic At Hanging Rock

Inside Horror
Janus Films

An adaptation of Cliff Green's 1967 novel of the same name, Picnic At Hanging Rock is a horror film like no other, one that settles on the mind like a scary dream on a summer's night.

Expertly lensed by director Peter Weir, the tale of a gaggle of school girls going missing at the film's eponymous location is ethereal and real at the same time, with Weir in his element turning rural Australia into an even more desolate and mysterious place than you could ever imagine. The closing shot will stick to your retinas for many years that follow.

Make no mistake, this is not an out an out Aussie horror flick in the vein of, say, Wolf Creek, no, this is something far different on the unsettling spectrum. There's no boogeymen jumping out on you, or a drop of blood spilled, but the fear of the unknown is what makes this one a worthy entry on this list.
