13. Sausage Party

Release Date: August 12

What It's About: A sausage named Frank (Seth Rogen) is madly in love with a hot dog bun named Brenda (Kristen Wiig), and when the two are purchased together in the supermarket where they live, they think it will mean their going to paradise together.

When they find out that the truth is merely to be devoured by humans, they stage a revolt with the rest of their supermarket companions.

Why It Can Save Hollywood: Because there's no chance of another animated movie this daring coming out any time soon. Reviews of a rough-cut from SXSW earlier this year praised it for its boundary-pushing humour, including a graphic food orgy sequence, and its unexpected allegorical dimension regarding human existence.

In a time where blandly generic animations like The Angry Birds Movie and Ratchet and Clank get churned out, this should be the perfect response, offending just as many as (if not more than) it entertains.
