6. Midnight Special

Release Date: November 25 What It's About: Very little is known about Jeff Nichols' (Take Shelter, Mud) most ambitious effort to date, except that it's a sci-fi chase movie about a father and son going on the run once the boy manifests mysterious powers. Why It Can Save Hollywood: Nichols has proven with his three features to date that he's a true original, and having seemingly had his fill of down-to-Earth, slice-of-life dramas, it's tremendously exciting to see him take his craft to a whole other level. A ridiculously stacked cast, including Michael Shannon (because of course), Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Joel Edgerton and Sam Shepard pretty much seals the deal on this one. Hopefully the final product will live up to the aura of enigma built around it, and going by Nichols' immense track record so far, that seems pretty damn likely.
