4. Triple Nine
Release Date: September 11 (US) / September 18 (UK) What It's About: An epic heist film in which a criminal gang and a number of corrupt cops are blackmailed into executing a seemingly impossible job, to murder a rookie cop in order to distract the police from their huge heist across town. Why It Can Save Hollywood: John Hillcoat has proven himself a talent to watch with his Aussie breakout The Proposition, which he followed up with the devastating The Road and the solid Lawless. Though the script for this new movie comes from newbie screenwriter Matt Cook, it landed on the Hollywood Black List a few years ago, so fear not. Triple Nine signals a shift of gears for the filmmaker, sinking his teeth into a very different type of ensemble film, one which reportedly features eight main characters, played by Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Casey Affleck, Anthony Mackie and Gal Godot. That's without even mentioning supporting parts for Teresa Palmer and Clifton Collins Jr. It's always refreshing to see a director sliding firmly out of their comfort zone, and if he pulls it off, don't be surprised to see Marvel Studios or Warner Brothers knocking at his door for future superhero movies.
