15 Original Upcoming Movies Which Might Save Hollywood
3. Passengers
Release Date: TBA What It's About: A spacecraft is taking thousands of passengers to a colony planet, but unbeknownst to anyone asleep on-board, one of the stasis chambers isn't working. As such, the man inside the pod, Jim Preston (Chris Pratt), is woken up 90 years ahead of schedule, and driven by a fear of spending the remainder of his life alone, wakes up a female passenger, Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence). Why It Can Save Hollywood: Because how often do the most popular young actor and actress in Hollywood get paired for a project that isn't a lame romantic comedy? Don't be mistaken, Passengers is a sci-fi romantic drama, but with two sublime actors attached alongside Oscar-nominated director Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), there's a ton to be excited about. Sure, it's hard to ignore the rather dubious presence of Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour, Prometheus) as screenwriter, though it's also important to remember that Spaihts' version of the Prometheus script was much better before Damon Lindelof got his grubby mitts on it. And if it somehow ends up sucking, a gangbusters box office is still all but guaranteed: even the lamest sci-fi romances tend to do pretty well, because they've got an appealing element targeted at both men and women.
