15 Original Upcoming Movies Which Might Save Hollywood
14. Crimson Peak
Release Date: October 16 What It's About: Key details have been intentionally kept under wraps, but here's the basic plot: set in 19th century northern England, author Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) discovers that there's more to her suave new husband Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) than meets the eye, and the crumbling mansion they're sharing together appears to very much have a life of its own. Why It Can Save Hollywood: One thing's guaranteed when you sit down to watch a Guillermo del Toro film: he's going to deliver a stylistic feast that rightly justifies his place in the upper echelons of big-budget filmmaking. The scripts he works form often leave plenty to be desired (and with del Toro co-writing this one with his Mimic scribe Matthew Robins, it may prove no different), but from what's been shown off so far, Crimson Peak looks like it should be a thrilling riff on old-school components, and a stupid-good cast also including Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam, Doug Jones and Burn Gorman certainly doesn't hurt. The horror genre is so often rote and dull that it'll be refreshing to see a filmmaker of del Toro's discipline taking the haunted house formula and (hopefully) dialing it up to 11.
