Kingsman: The Golden Circle was one of 2017's most disappointing movies and while it had its moments and the performances were solid, it was a complete and utter mess with a ridiculously overlong run-time. As such, this scene where Merlin (the always-fantastic Mark Strong) sacrifices himself by setting off a landmine to take out several henchmen most likely took everyone by surprise, since it is a genuinely brilliant moment.

This is, believe it or not, an incredibly moving and poignant scene that is likely to leave some people quietly shedding tears. Additionally, the cover of Country Roads which Merlin sings to lure the henchmen over to him is great and only enhances the scene's bittersweet emotion further.

Sure, the film itself let us down, but it did boast one of the greatest sacrificial movie deaths of recent times, so that certainly counts for something.
