15 PERFECT Scenes In Otherwise Disappointing Movies

10. 28 Weeks Later: The Opening

The Lost World Sarah
20th Century Fox

Living up to the brilliant 28 Days Later was always going to be hard, but with this phenomenal opening scene, in which the zombies attack a cottage filled with survivors, at first it seemed like they might just do it.

This opening is horrifying in the best possible way, with the ferocious violence, brutally tense editing, John Murphy's flawless musical score and the moral ambiguity of the situation making for a genuinely nightmarish sequence. Most hauntingly of all, protagonist Don (Robert Carlyle) abandons his own wife when she's cornered by the zombies, making this opening even more gut-wrenching. You'll forget to breathe right up until Don finally escapes from the large crowd of zombies chasing him.

Alas, the film tails off after this. 28 Weeks Later, despite its great performances and frightening set-pieces, doesn't really work. This is largely because the outbreak it depicts was so avoidable and was set off by some insanely idiotic decisions, making it a highly frustrating viewing.

Ultimately, 28 Weeks ditches the humanity that made 28 Days so special for an empty, exhausting and stunningly ugly gore-fest. It also features probably the dumbest kids in horror movie history.
