15 Planned Horror Film Remakes That Thankfully Never Happened

11. The Monster Squad

Also back in 2010 was the news that producer Rob Cohen (director of XXX and The Fast and the Furious) was interested in helming a remake of The Monster Squad, a horror comedy from 1987 which sees a team of Universal Monsters (led by Dracula) combating a group kids who are trying to stop them from taking over the world. While not a major success when it was first released, the film has went on to enjoy a cult reputation. The film was set to be produced by Paramount and Platinum Dunes (who are behind a lot of the recent horror remakes) but it ultimately fell through. The Platinum Dunes team admitted in 2014 that the project was dead. So what happened? One potential reason for the remake cancellation could have been that, given the film's niche limited fanbase, that most people wouldn't even know or want a Monster Squad Remake. However, the most plausible explanation is Universal have much stricter rules as it pertains with licensing the likeness of their monsters than they did in 1987.
