Due to the strange supernatural activity that occurred on the set of Poltergeist, an urban legend has developed known as 'The Poltergeist Curse'. It's up to you whether you buy into the myth but there’s no denying the odd phenomenon surrounding production.

Zelda Rubinstein experienced a vision of her dog approaching her and saying goodbye. Hours later, she received a phone call from her mother to tell her that her dog died. Child actor Oliver Robins had a near death experience when the clown’s arms were wrapped around his neck too tight and he started choking. He cried out "I can’t breathe" and it was not until he was visibly turning purple that Steven Spielberg clocked on to release him free.

JoBeth Williams got the most spooked of all. In the apartment she was residing at during filming, she’d return to the building and find the pictures on her walls rearranged. Williams also had a miserable time filming the swimming pool scene as she’d spent five days in wet and muddy conditions, with electrical equipment being dangerously close to the water. Worst of all, she was acting alongside real skeletons because they were cheaper to use.

The cast and crew were so tense that Will Sampson performed a legitimate exorcism on the studios. It made the team feel more at ease but post production, many people associated with the Poltergeist franchise met their untimely deaths, thus birthing the 'Poltergeist Curse'.
