8. One Of Hunt's Team Is A Mole - Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
The Twist: One member of Ethan Hunt's (Tom Cruise) trusted inner circle of allies, in fact, turns out to be a mole, turning on him in the movie's most shocking moment. That's right, either Brandt (Jeremy Renner), Benji (Simon Pegg), or Luther (Ving Rhames) turns out to be a bad guy. They wouldn't dare turn Luther to the dark side, would they? Why It Could Ruin The Movie: Because one of the biggest joys of the Mission: Impossible franchise is in watching Hunt work as part of a cohesive unit, his dedicated back-up team helping him pull off insane, indeed, impossible missions. To completely upend that, especially with one of these likeable, established characters, would be a huge downer and feel like a shock for its own sake. Don't screw with a winning formula: make Alec Baldwin's CIA chief the secret villain if you need to, but don't turn one of Hunt's cohorts against him. Especially not Pegg's comic relief character Benji, because that's pretty much where the movie's credibility would crumble apart like a soggy cookie.
