15 Predictions For 2014 Movies Everybody Got Wrong

3. How To Train Your Dragon 2 Will Destroy The Box Office

The Prediction: After DreamWorks' splendid animation How to Train Your Dragon scored $494 million worldwide, was nominated for two Oscars (Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song) and scored 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, it seemed reasonable that the massively-hyped sequel would improve upon the original movie's box office showing with a strong $700+ million haul. The Reality: Despite some of the year's strongest reviews (92%), How to Train Your Dragon 2 scored a respectable if surprisingly low $618 million, the most shocking fact of which was that the movie earned only $176 million in the US compared to the original movie's $217 million. The film did play extremely well overseas, however, accounting for its overall improvement over its predecessor. Still, domestic grosses are often more important to the studio than international (as they take a larger portion of the pot), and Dragon 2's US box office decline has mystified movie prognosticators ever since the film came out. It just goes to show that not every successful hit movie will absolutely hit a home run the second time around...
