The straight faced, serious characters in comedy films are often understated; typically used as an anchor to the madness that surrounds them they are often forgotten about. Not in this case, Simon Peggs Nicholas Angels timing and visual reactions to a lot of the odd things that are said to him make him as funny as anyone else in the cast. Its also fair to say that Hot Fuzz is a deliberate homage to everything cliché about police/detective movies without shirking its obviousness. Simon Peggs ability to carry this film with a straight face and make it believable is one of the things that make it such a hit.
